Undergraduate Research Opportunities

The Biology Department believes that participation in research is a valuable component of undergraduate study and encourages students to explore this experience. You should carefully consider your own priorities and needs before deciding to pursue research. Caltech is now accepting applications for our WAVE Fellows undergraduate research program. Washington and Lee University provides a liberal arts education that develops students’ capacity to think freely, critically, and humanely and to conduct themselves with honor, integrity, and civility. Graduates will be prepared for life-long learning, personal achievement, responsible leadership, service to others, and engaged citizenship in a global and diverse society. Applications will be evaluated by Caltech faculty, which will select prospective fellows from the applicant pool.

Non-Yale Research Opportunities

Students awarded a Wave Fellowship will be required to submit a project plan after consultation and collaboration with the mentor. The submission of the project plan and fellowship forms by the deadlines will constitute acceptance of the award. The 2022 WAVE Fellows award $6,840 for the ten-week period, plus a $2,300 on-campus housing and travel supplement.

The CanSUR Program supports 32 undergraduates for a 10-week period each summer. Undergraduates will be accepted from colleges and universities from across the country to work with one of 82 Case Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers. Housing and travel allowances are available for select appointees. Undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in the development of gravitational-wave astronomy through LIGO – the Laser Inferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory. This intensive summer program takes place each year at Caltech, funded in part through the Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program of the National Science Foundation.
